Rinpung Dzong Paro
A 15th-century fortress-monastery above the town and river.
A private, all-inclusive journey across western Bhutan: Paro, the capital Thimphu and the subtropical Punakha valley over the Dochula Pass, finishing with the climb to the Tiger's Nest — on your own dates.
The fullest western circuit — Paro and Thimphu paired with Punakha across the Dochula Pass, moving between valleys at a comfortable pace with your guide and private driver throughout.
Fly into Paro on one of the world's most scenic approaches. Your guide and private driver meet you and transfer you to your hotel, with time to settle in and adjust to the altitude before a gentle orientation walk along the Paro river, past the white walls of Rinpung Dzong.
A full day in the valley: the National Museum in the round Ta Dzong watchtower, the 15th-century Rinpung Dzong, and the 7th-century Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan's oldest and holiest temples. Time to slow down, watch daily rituals and take in the valley between stops.
Drive to Thimphu to stand beneath the giant Buddha Dordenma, browse the weekend market and visit the imposing Tashichho Dzong. There is time for craft workshops, the memorial chorten and the takin preserve before an evening in town.
Climb to the 3,100-metre Dochula Pass, crowned with 108 memorial chortens and, on a clear day, a panorama of the eastern Himalaya. Descend through warm, forested valleys to Punakha, Bhutan's old winter capital, and its magnificent riverside dzong where two rivers meet.
Explore Punakha Dzong, one of the country's most beautiful, then take a gentle walk through rice terraces to Chimi Lhakhang, the temple of the "Divine Madman". An unhurried day in the subtropical valley, with the option of a short raft on the Mo Chhu.
Cross back over the Dochula Pass to Paro for the trip's highlight: the hike to Paro Taktsang, the Tiger's Nest, clinging to a cliff around 900 metres above the valley floor. The trail climbs through pine forest and prayer flags to the monastery — four to five hours round trip at an unhurried pace, with ponies available for the first stretch.
A relaxed morning before your private driver transfers you to Paro International Airport for your onward flight. Timings can be shifted to suit an earlier or later departure.
The landmarks your guide takes you to across Paro, Thimphu and the Punakha valley.
